                            How Are Children Affected?

 

Normal growth and development is severely compromised in children who live in homes where there is domestic violence and/or children who are sexually abused.  These children experience tremendous fear that gets expressed in many ways.  The negative effects of violence on children who witness and/or are themselves victims of abuse can be seen in physical, emotional, psychological. and cognitive symptoms.

 Children are affected by violence in some of the following ways:

· Risk to physical safety

•Eating disorders

•Depression

· An increase in aggressive  & violent outbursts

· More medical problems such as headaches, 

digestive problems

· Nightmares/ Sleeping Disorders

•Emotional Neediness

  

•Solving problems using violent means

•Over compliance, clinginess, withdrawal

•Aggressive acting out, destructive rages

•Detachment, avoidance, fantasy family life

•Finger biting, restlessness, shaking, stuttering

· Poor social skills

· Trouble in school

  

Statistics reveal that children growing up in an abusive home are 75% more likely to become an abuser or victim of abuse in their adult relationships.

 

 

How Are Teens Affected?

 

                                                                      

    Teens survivors may display the following:          

 · Drug & alcohol abuse                                         

· Low self-esteem                                                  

· Delinquency                                                         

· Suicide                                                                 

· Finding themselves in their own abusive          

relationship                                                          

 

 

               Teen Girls                                         Teen Boys

Fear that male violence is normal                           Fear that all males are violent

Learning that women do not deserve respect         Learning to disrespect females

Accepting violence in their relationships                 Using violence in their relationships

Embarrassment about being female                       Confusion about being a man
